I’m a 71 year old retiree who decided to prioritize my physical fitness. To achieve this, I sought out a Senior group to join, and that’s how I came across Gigi West, our Senior Group Instructor. Our group consists of more than 20 seniors of various ages. Gigi ensures that each session is filled with creative and engaging workouts that focus on strengthening our upper and lower body, improving flexibility and balance, and maintaining proper body positions. I have taken several group exercise classes virtually with Gigi during the pandemic via 24 Hour Fitness. She took over for another instructor who took a step back from teaching virtual classes. Challenging all odds

Meet Steven

During the early days of Covid in April of 2020 Steve had brain surgery. He recalls loosing his faculties exponentially and many doctors kept telling him so many things. So afterwards, the doctors and physical therapists sternly pointed him to the gym to get back up walking and functioning again. He learned all of that again from attending group classes at the gym. As many people dealing with different challenges, the hardest part of his journey actually wasn’t the physical challenges. It was the loneliness and lacking of family support. But attending the gym and making new friends along the way, allowed him to create new bonds. He found the support that has made the ultimate difference in his daily life. “Fitness is now an intimate part of my life and brought me enriching new friendships!!”, he says. When facing many moments of painful physical difficulties, he recalls: “I was trying to figure out a brief way to work in the ups and downs about death. Believe it or not, the mortality is still an open question. It looks like it’ll depend on whether there’s been a lot of shrinkage in the next series of CT’s in February. It shrunk 23% in 1 year- that can’t continue but it seems to have stabilized pressure.”

There are still some ups and downs. But he maintains a positive outlook, giving credit to his gym friends for that. More importantly he finishes saying, “I got support that has made the ultimate difference in my life I cherish.”

And this my friends, is a wonderful person I had the honor to meet during the pandemic times. He’s a regular participant in several classes, and I have the privilege to have him in my Bodycombat class. Never missing a class! His presence is a needed company that I treasure every Thursday we get to see each other. He is more than a gym Buddy. He’s a friend. And this gentleman’s name is Steven. The inspiration for today’s story of superhuman strength.
